Punjab is the state in the northwest of Republic of India, forming the part of the larger Punjab region. Punjab is located in the north-western India and has an area of about 50,362 km2. The state is bordered by the Indian states of the Himachal Pradesh to the east, Haryana to the south east and south, Rajasthan to south west and the Pakistani province of Punjab to the west. In the north it is bounded by the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir. Punjab capital is located in the Chandigarh, the Union Territory and also capital of the neighbouring state of Haryana.



After partition of the India in the 1947, the Punjab province of the British India. It was divided between the India and the Pakistan. The Indian Punjab was divided in the year 1966 with formation of the new states of Haryana and the Himachal Pradesh along side with the current state of the Punjab. Punjab is the only state in the India with the majority of the Sikh population.

The term Punjab consists of two words: “punj means Five and ab means water, thus it is the land of five rivers. Historically the Punjab region has been the gateway to Indian Subcontinent for most foreign invaders.


Agriculture is largest industry in the Punjab. Other industry include the manufacturing of the scientific instruments, electrical goods, financial service, machine tools, sewing machines, agricultural goods, textiles, sports goods, tourism, garments and the processing of the pine oil and the sugar. Punjab also has largest number of the steel rolling mill plants in India which is located in the “steel Town”- Mandi Gobindgarh in Fateh Sahib Districts.

Climate:


Punjab’s climate is characterised by the extreme hot and the extreme cold conditions. The annual temperatures in the Punjab range 1 °C to 46 °C but can also reach 49 °C in the summer and the 0 °C in the winter.

The Public transport in the Pakistan is provided by the buses, auto rickshaws, Indian railways and the international rail connection to the Pakistan (Samjhauta Express). The state has the large network of multimodal transportation system

Cities of Punjab:

1.      Amritsar :

Amritsar historically also called as Rāmdāspur and colloquially as the Ambarsar, is the city in north-western part in India. Amritsar is the spiritual centre for the Sikh religion and the administrative headquarters of Amritsar district in the state of Punjab.

It is home to the Harmandir Sahib commonly popular as the Golden Temple, the spiritual and cultural centre for the Sikh religion. This important Sikh shrine attracts many visitors than Taj Mahal with more than 100,000 visitors on week days alone and it is the most popular destination for Non-resident Indians (NRI) in the whole of India. The city also houses the Sikh temporal and political authority, Akal Takht, as well as Sikh Parliament.

2.      Ludhiana :


Ludhiana is the city and Municipal Corporation in Ludhiana district in the Indian state of the Punjab. It is the largest city in the state with the estimated population of 3,487,882 as per the Census 2011. The population increases substantially during the harvesting season due to the migration of labourers from eastern states of Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Odisha and Delhi. It is a major industrial centre of northern India, and was referred to as India's Manchester by the BBC.
